Mental preparation for a half marathon
Dear runners, we are getting ever closer to the 8th Subotica Half Marathon. Besides physical preparation, mental preparation for this undertaking is certainly essential, and in this article we bring you tips and tricks on how to get mentally ready for this sporting event, because a half marathon is not just a race, it is a personal journey that begins long before you pin the number to your shirt. For most participants, especially beginners and recreational runners, it is a challenge that requires discipline, patience and strong will, and the mental strategies used by professionals are not reserved for the elite; anyone can apply them.
- Set realistic expectations
Beginners often make the mistake of trying to compete with others. Instead, focus on your own pace rather than the speed of more experienced runners, set the goal “finish the race” rather than “break a record”, and admit to yourself that taking part is already a success. Professionals were once beginners too, and their progress began with modest goals and consistency.
- Train your mind, not just your legs
The mental techniques professionals use can help you cope more easily with stress, fatigue and uncertainty: visualise success, picture yourself making your way along the course with a smile on your face, use micro-goals, break the race into smaller parts. The next kilometre, the next turn, the next step. Find a sentence that gives you strength, such as “Step by step” or “I can do this”. When it gets hard, say to yourself: “This is a challenge, but I am overcoming it.”
- Learn to accept “bad days”
Some days will be hard: the weather may be bad, the body sluggish, the mind restless. That is part of the process. Even professionals have days when they fail to achieve everything they planned. What matters is not to blame yourself, to understand that progress is not linear, and to remember that you have already moved from where you started: you are training, moving, dreaming!
- Adapt your mental strategy to your running style
Recreational runners run at different paces and for different reasons, such as health, fun or company… Accordingly, if you run with a friend, conversation can be a form of mental support.
If you run alone, music, the rhythm of your steps and your surroundings can be your motivation. If you run for peace of mind, focus on your breathing and the moment.
- Enjoy it!
Don’t forget why you started running! Maybe for your health, maybe to push your limits, maybe to escape everyday stress. A half marathon is a celebration of your discipline and strength. And the best part? You are running your own race. Whatever the result, reaching the finish line is a personal victory. See you on 31 August in Subotica!
